My journey with breath.

Someone once told me, “You wear your shoulders as if they were earrings.” Doh!  At that time I was working in a high stress environment. So much that one of my eyelids would have a muscle spasm every time I sat down at my desk.  I soon left that job, dove straight into the field of bodywork and my shoulders eventually dropped. 

When I started treating clients it was easy for me to see these similar stress patterns in the people laying on my table. I began figuring out ways to calm their nervous system while also treating their pain or injury. Eventually leading me to bring breath into their sessions to help with releasing tension in their body.  I was fascinated by how unaware most of my clients were of their own breath.  

Then one day I started playing Underwater Rugby. (UWR is a sport that is played entirely underwater where two teams compete to win the most points by putting a ball in the opponents goal that sits at the bottom of a pool.) I had to do specific breath training that helped me hold my breath for longer periods of time.

That training brought me huge insight into my regular breathing pattern. That's when I realized my years of living with anxiety had created this under current.  I had no idea my not breathing properly had become automatic. Then I thought, if this pattern snuck up on me, an experienced bodyworker, imagine what this is like for someone who is not trained in working with the body. 

The bigger problem.

Many of us take the breath for granted because it is something we can do automatically. We think we are breathing properly because well, we’re alive. However, when we deal with a stressful situation our physiological response can turn to "fight or flight" causing automatic short and quick breaths. And if we have chronic stress over time this response will stint our regular breathing without us even realizing it.

Meaning, we could be habitually not bringing in enough oxygen needed to fully supply our body. If our body doesn’t have enough oxygen then we can’t properly fuel our vital organs, eliminate wastes, and fight diseases. Ultimately leading us to be ill equipped to cope with everyday stress and shortening our life span.

That’s why I created the Power Under Pressure program.

My Underwater Rugby playing was a pivotal moment in my own breathwork practice.

  • I learned how to deep dive inside myself to find my inner calm when external pressures turned on.

  • I applied this to my personal hell storm when I found meditation could no longer cut it for me.

  • It became a key component that moved me from agonizing insomnia to sleeping though the night.
